Birth Certificates, SSNs, Passports, & Global Entry for Your Infant

FAQs

Do I need to order copies of my baby’s birth certificate?

Getting copies of your baby’s birth certificate isn’t hard — but it is an extra step you have to take (and you’ll need copies for things like applying for a passport!). It is definitely worth ordering several copies.

Each state has their own Vital Records office but you can most likely also use VitalChek. It can be done by mail, phone, or online and typically requires proof of identification and payment.

What happens if I forgot to order a social security card at the hospital?

You can still order one! You’ll need a social security card to open a bank account for your child, add them to health insurance, and apply for certain government benefits, so it’s important you get one once your child is born.

You can begin the application process online at the Social Security Administration’s website (more info about SSN's can be found here), and complete the process in person at your local Social Security office. You will start the application online and complete the process in a local Social Security office or card center. Or, if you are not able to apply online, you can print out the Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5, available at www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf).

Does my infant need TSA precheck and/or Global Entry?

Children under the age of 12 do not need TSA precheck in order to accompany an enrolled parent through a precheck lane at the airport. They will, however, need their own Global Entry membership (which includes TSA precheck) if they are to accompany you through Customs. This is only applicable if you have Global Entry and plan to travel internationally with your infant. Your child will need a passport, and will go through the same interview process you do.

**Also - your child will need their own email address in order to apply for Global Entry, so it’s worth setting something up early!
